We distinguish two types of human body hair: Vellus (fine, delicate, short and light-colored hair) and Terminal (head hair, eyebrows and lashes).

During sexual maturity, under the influence of sexual hormones, both men and women will develop pubic and axillary hair, and males will develop facial hair additionally. The hair color is the result of Melanin hair pigment. Dark hair contains more Eumelanin, while lighter contains more pale pigment Pheomelanin.

Normal hair growth is an individual characteristics and it depends on body part. The places where the hair is rooted are called hair follicles and they are located the middle layer of the skin – dermis. In adult human beings there are around 5 million of hair follicles and under normal circumstances their number does not increase.

It is scientifically proven fact that shaving, cutting and hair removal do not affect the hair growth rate or its thickness although it is a common misbelief. Increased hair growth (Hipertrichosis) may cause a major psychological problem when it occurs on the face and body, especially in women.

The Hair Growth Phases
  • Anagen – Active hair growth phase in follicle. On the scalp it could last for 1000 days
  • Catagen – Transitional phase, lasts about one or two weeks
  • Telogena – Resting phase that lasts about 3-4 months before the new hair pushes the old one out
Approximately 90% of all hairs are in the anagen phase at any time, growing 0.37 mm per day.
Based on the causes of the excessive hairiness we distinguish:
  • Drug induced (local and systemic corticosteroids, androgens, minoxidil…)
  • Endocrine hypertrichosis caused by hormonal imbalance of the body
  • Hirsutism –the excessive hairiness seen in women upper lip, cheeks, chin, back, breasts, arms and abdomen. The cause could be polycystic ovaries (PCO Sy), ovarian tumors, diseases and tumors of the adrenal or the pituitary gland...
Ingrown Hair (Pili incarnati) represent frequent aesthetical problem in both males and females. In men they appear after shaving in the form of pimples, blemishes, and often scars (pseudofolliculitis) while in women after depilation mostly on bikini line, arms and legs. The ingrown hair is the most successfully eliminated after just two laser treatments!
